I have all the versions of Gilels playing Beethoven's 4th in addition to several others. Listening to Gilels here is almost a religious experience! Those of you who want to taste the pure lyricisim of Beethoven's 4th will do well in acquiring this along with Maria Grinberg/Neeme Jarvi. Odd that the Penguin guide makes no mention of these. Gilels is one of the few who DOESN'T rush yet manages to maintain that propulsive, driving force that is such and integral aspect of Beethoven's music.

2016-06-06 · These Beethoven performances cobbled from several 70s DGG releases could not be finer. They are musically and technically from the mind and fingers of a giant. Where the Waldstein can sound a little like a technical exercise or even cartoonish in some hands, Gilels finds the rich nourishment between the myriad of notes.

Perhaps only Brendel and Richard Goode are in Gilels league when it comes to articulation. Mind you, Gilels was a great pianist, and there are some marvelous moments here, but I would direct those who want to hear him in Beethoven concerti at his best to seek out the recording he made of the 4th and 5th concerti with the Philharmonia Orchestra under Leopold Ludwig at about the same time as the Reiner recordings. Gilels allowed the Soviet bureaucracy to lock him into long-running record contracts, but each of his recordings was unusual and his failure (by three missing sonatas) to complete a Beethoven cycle Emil Gilels is a fantastic musician, his Beethoven interpretations are almost unique.
